CHOPARD and L.U.C. A Distinguished Watch Manufacturer

An elaborately engraved 22-karat gold micro-rotor with a highly efficient cam and rocker mechanism efficiently winds the watch, and keeps movement thickness to a minimum. Luxurious details of high horology abound, such as a swan neck regulator, and a costly Breguet overcoil hairspring, the latter ensuring greater immunity to positional variances than the flat variety. Fine decorations of Geneva waves on the bridges, delicate beveling on edges of steel parts, and finely polished screws and jewel settings give this mechanism great visual beauty. Having met the 12 required strict quality guidelines outlined by the Canton of Geneva, this movement bears the Geneva Seal, the highest official recognition of traditional high craft in the watchmaking world. Further accolades come in the form of a C.O.S.C. chronometer certificate, demonstrating that the movement's beauty is not just in its craft, but in its performance as well.

Calibers 3.96 and 4.96 followed after, and showcase the same twin-barrel micro- otor technology, but with a slightly more basic finish, and flat hairspring. These movements are also excellent performers, and like their supremely luxurious 1.96 sibling are both efficient in their winding, long in their power reserve and extremely flat. Both also are issued with a chronometer certificate, which provides verifiable proof of their precision. The L.U.C. Tonneau contains caliber 3.97, a micro-rotor caliber with the same technical construction, but appropriately shaped to fit the barrel shaped watch. The production of this movement places Chopard amongst the few manufacturers remaining which go to the expense of producing shaped movements --- those whose contour matches the case that contain them.

Special mention must be made of the L.U.C. caliber 1.98, a manual winding movement with the exceptional power reserve of eight days. Powered by four serially operating mainspring barrels, this movement is both technically impressive, and beautifully crafted. Like the 1.96 caliber, this movement has the Breguet overcoil hairspring, swan-neck regulator and fine finishing that earn it the Geneva Seal. Like all L.U.C. calibers it has earned a chronometer certificate. This rare and beautiful mechanism powers both the L.U.C. Quattro, and the L.U.C. Regulator. Motivated by the striking design and fine mechanism, the judging panel of Montres Passion and Uhrenwelt Magazine awarded Chopard the coveted "Watch Of the Year" award for the L.U.C. Regulator in 2004.

 Chopard has also distinguished itself in the heady realm of high complications. Caliber 1.02 is a manual winding tourbillon with 8-days power reserve. Evidence of the superb hand finish is the Geneva Seal, which Chopard has earned the right to stamp on its bridge. Beyond cosmetics, several technical details distinguish this fine complicated movement. Aside from the impressive power reserve brought about by the 4-barrel movement, the balance wheel employs a new balance wheel, called Variner, which uses inertial weights set directly into the wheel. This system allows considerable range of adjustment (+62/-62) and is more aerodynamic than a conventional balance wheel. This construction, along with a fine Breguet overcoil hairspring and the meticulous regulation skills of Chopard's master watchmakers results in a tourbillon which passes the C.O.S.C. testing. Besides Patek Philippe, Chopard is the only other maker who sends their tourbillon movements for chronometer testing; this bold extra step is notable because tourbillon movements are, as a rule, more temperamental than watches with conventional escapements.

Another complicated entry in 2005 was the L.U.C. Lunar One. This watch, using the fine 1.96 movement, represents a perpetual calendar with a most unusual moonphase display. Accurate to a single day in 122 years, this moon display features an orbital motion, using a series of rotating sapphire discs to illustrate the relative position of the moon as it appears throughout its monthly cycle. In addition to days, month and leap year cycle, the large date is displayed prominently at 12 o'clock. Recently, the addition of the L.U.C Strike One has shown Chopard's intent to develop chiming complications -- while this beautiful watch "only" offers an hourly strike capability, it is all but certain that more complicated repeating watches will follow from Chopard at a later date.

Chopard is currently working with the Fleurier based companies Parmigiani, Bovet, and Vaucher to institute a new, very demanding qualitative certification --the Fondation Qualite Fleurier (FQF). Similar to the prestigious Geneva Seal, this Fleurier Quality Hallmark judges not only movement finishing but also timekeeping performance of the assembled watch (for example, the famed C.O.S.C. only tests uncased movements). Also significant, unlike the Geneva Seal which is awarded only to movements assembled in the Canton of Geneva, this rigorous new standard will be open to any company, regardless of location. While it remains to be seen what this new quality standard will provoke in the industry, there can be little doubt that Chopard has become a force to be reckoned with amongst the elite watch manufacturers.

And this was ultimately also the case in 1967. The 8541- calibre automatic movement, the toughest of its kind at that time, powered both of these heavy duty watches, namely the Ingenieur and the Aquatimer. However, unlike the historical model, the current Vintage Aquatimer has a see-through back cover.
